Gucci Unveils The Art of Silk with Julia Garner

by Tina

Between 1960 and 1981, the brand produced nearly 80 scarf designs, including the exquisite Flora scarf designed for Princess Grace of Monaco, the iconic Horsebit scarf in 1953, and the GG Monogram scarf in 1969.

For those who love the finer things in life, Gucci’s silk scarves are more than just accessories, they are exquisite masterpieces. This month, the brand launches the “Art of Silk” collection, a multi-dimensional project that celebrates Gucci’s rich history of silk craftsmanship and innovates and reinterprets the art form for the modern era.

Julia Garner, of Ozark fame, stars in the short film Keep It Gucci: The Art of Silk, shot by Steven Meisel. Against a backdrop of a captivating cityscape at night, the 31-year-old actress showcased the fluid elegance of silk, while the House’s vibrant florals – an iconic design conceived by Italian illustrator Vittorio Accornero de Testa in 1966 – reminded us that timeless elegance never fades.

Gucci’s relationship with silk began in the 1950s, with early designs echoing the House’s iconic leather goods designs. In 1958, Accornero collaborated with a renowned silk producer in Como, Italy, to create the nautical-themed “Tolda di Nave” pattern, marking the beginning of decades of innovation in the field of silk.

Throughout the 1960s, Accornero transformed silk into wearable art with his imaginative designs. Between 1960 and 1981, he designed nearly 80 scarves, ranging from delicate florals for Princess Grace of Monaco to nautical and animal motifs. The iconic Horsebit motif, first unveiled in 1953, and the GG Monogram, introduced in 1969, further cemented Gucci’s place in the art of silk.

To pay tribute to this heritage, Gucci is launching the “90 x 90” project, inviting nine international artists to reinterpret five of the brand’s most enduring scarf themes. The project blends the boundaries of pop culture, fine art and fashion. The artists – Robert Barry, Everett Glenn, Sara Leghissa, Currynew, Jonny Niesche, Gio Pastori, Walter Petrone, Yu Cai and Inji Seo – bring their own unique perspectives to the project, delivering interpretations that range from witty and humorous to beautifully poignant.

Complementing the works is a new book published in partnership with Assouline. Gucci: The Art of Silk delves into the rich history and artistry behind Gucci’s head scarves (foulards), exploring their cultural significance and their historical evolution. This collectible book comes in a beautifully printed silk slipcase featuring the iconic Flora print on the cover.

For Gucci lovers in Hong Kong, the brand’s Canton Road store is one of only 22 boutiques worldwide selected to showcase the “Art of Silk” project in-store – a showcase not to be missed.
