Things have gotten a little weird since Emma Chamberlain last shared her beauty secrets for Vogue. The 23-year-old Met Gala correspondent extraordinaire has found herself liking a darker hue in her makeup—and a spooky red eyeshadow is always a good choice.
After completing her “Biologique Recherche”-themed skincare routine, the YouTube star began priming her eyes with Milk Makeup Hydro Grip Eye Primer, which she’s been using ever since she discovered the power of a little eye cream.
“I had been using no eye cream for a while, and that was a little annoying,” Chamberlain says. “My eyeshadow never lasted. [That’s when I realized] maybe I need to get an eye cream! Maybe that’s why they sell eye creams.”
After applying her primer, the California native dipped her brush into a few smoky shades from the Makeup by Mario palette. “Underrated eyeshadow colors—grey,” she says. But that wasn’t the only hue Chamberlain wore today.
“I’m going to use red and red [shadow]. I love red shadow [and] eyeliner,” the newly chopped blonde says, picking up Natasha Denona’s mini bronze eyeshadow palette.
Chamberlain first discovered her penchant for red eyes while doing makeup for an Acne Studios event. “I was talking to my makeup artist and I was like, ‘Let’s go for something scary,’ and she was like, ‘Let’s go for something red,’” she says. “I was like, ‘Stop it! I’ve been waiting for this moment.’ I’ve been incorporating it subtly into my look ever since.”
After applying ruby-hued shadow to the creases and lower lash line, the Forbidden Fruit actor completed the look with concealer, foundation, and a little contouring—blush, wait. “Blush is so popular right now, but it’s not for me,” Chamberlain says. “It’s too sweet for me. Maybe I like to look a little weirder.” For Chamberlain, weird equals subtle, and that’s exactly the vibe she’s going for.
“My view of beauty has changed a lot,” she said. “I personally don’t care so much about looking traditional and looking interesting.”
