Design Within Reach (DWR) has transformed Palm Desert’s historic Miles C. Bates “Wave House” into a Paul Smith oasis as part of a new agreement with curated vacation rental platform Boutique.
In celebration of the launch of DWR: The Paul Smith Collection — a dedicated indoor-outdoor furniture collection that celebrates the British designer’s longtime collaboration with Maharam — the architectural icon is unveiled alongside special edition pieces from the duo, from an Eames molded plastic side chair to an Eero Saarinen Womb Chair made from a Maharam textile featuring Paul Smith’s signature pattern.
Designed in 1955 by Walter S. White, the mid-century modern residence is known for its curvaceous roof that mimics the nearby San Jacinto Mountains. Now listed as a City of Palm Desert Historic Landmark, the home was originally a retreat and sculpture studio for Bates, who transformed it into a “social hub” for the Coachella Valley. It is worth mentioning that the Wave House was first opened to the public in February 2020 after being restored by Stayner Architects.
“The Paul Smith collection is versatile and can adapt to a variety of regions and architectural styles. However, we chose to launch the experiential experience of the collection in the ‘Wave House’ because the original and bold design of these houses complements the collection.”
Nobil added that the building is striking for its “unique roof design, which blends into the magnificent landscape of the lowland desert.”
