The 2025 Cannes Film Festival opens on Tuesday with plenty of glamorous red carpet looks (but no nude dresses, thanks to new rules). For more than eight decades, the two-week French event has produced some of the most iconic fashion moments to date.
The festival attracts the biggest names in film to preview new films from all over the world in all genres. In 1999, the heist film Entrapment, starring Sean Connery and Catherine Zeta-Jones, was set to premiere at the festival, and Zeta-Jones looked absolutely elegant.
The Welsh actor arrived at the festival in a gorgeous ball gown from Thierry Mugler’s Fall/Winter 1999 ready-to-wear collection. The floor-length gown was crafted from pink duchess silk with backless straps and a defined bodice.
The dress was understated and elegant, with a striking silver embellishment just below the plunging neckline. Zeta-Jones avoided a necklace in favor of a pair of silver teardrop earrings, bracelets on both wrists, and a bun to complete the gown’s simple appeal.
Before Hollywood star-stylist duos came along, Zeta-Jones single-handedly nailed the red carpet look. Time and again, she’s proven herself to be an original fashionista who pushes boundaries with her bold and extravagant looks. Only a few celebrities have managed to maintain their style and make the best-dressed lists like she has. As she ages, she still hasn’t given up on those wow moments.
To emulate Zeta-Jones’ 1999 look, start with a pink ball gown, like this floor-length gown from For Love & Lemons. Drop earrings by Alexis Bittar will echo the actor’s understated glamour, while a sterling silver bracelet will complete the look. For shoes, opt for pink satin stilettos. Finish off with your hair in a high bun.
