The 36th annual GLAAD Media Awards took place in Los Angeles on Thursday, bringing a celebration of the LGBTQ+ community. The awards ceremony was hosted by Michael Urie, who many may know from the hit comedy Ugly Betty. The ceremony kicked off at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in California, and many A-list celebrities made their way to the red carpet.
The awards ceremony’s red carpet proved that nothing can beat bold and vibrant fashion compared to standard gowns. From traditional elegance to dramatic luxury, attendees put their best foot forward. Doechii was dazzling in a Maison Margiela silhouette gown, which she paired with a tape measure necklace.
Jojo Siwa wore a new hairstyle with a rainbow flag printed on it, symbolizing pride, diversity, and unity in the community. She also wore a sparkly jacket with the words “Transgender Rights Are Human Rights” printed on it. This sentence is particularly poignant in the current US government that is actively trying to erase transgender people by taking away rights, banning related language, and more.
Wicked frontwoman Cynthia Erivo wore a Dior outfit and a French brand Lady bag for a chic look. She received the Stephen F. Korczak Special Award in recognition of her support for the LGBTQ+ community and raising awareness of issues affecting the community itself. Other guests in attendance included Lil Nas X, who just released an EP, Marren Morris, Lisa Ann Walter, and others.
Since 1990, the awards ceremony has been honoring the inclusion and fair representation of the LGBTQ+ community in the media. LGBTQ+ icons and allies came together to celebrate this moment, showing a spirit of solidarity and camaraderie in a tense sociopolitical atmosphere.
At a time when transgender rights are being brutally violated, the awards ceremony conveyed hope to audiences around the world: in the face of adversity, the LGBTQ+ community will rise to the challenge and fight for their rights as they have time and time again. This community will never give up.
