I’ve always struggled with frizzy hair. My fine, frizzy hair would never be smoothed down unless I used a straightener. But in the pursuit of healthy hair, I decided to go heat-free and just go with it, and I had to come up with an alternative.
The situation was made even more problematic by some new growth (thank you, Hair + Me). Now my scalp was covered in new growth, which made it even more difficult to detangle.
The only solution I could think of was to use some of the leftover hair oil I applied to the ends of my hair and quickly wipe the area, but that wasn’t the answer, says hairstylist and founder of Arkive, Adam Reed.
He explains that to maximize the benefits of hair oil, it should be applied to wet hair, not dry hair. Essentially, I was applying hair oil around my roots just to keep my hair flat, which in turn added weight to my hair. As a result, it made my hair greasier and made me wash my hair early—not a good idea.
Instead, Reed introduced me to liquid hair spray. I hadn’t tried this spray before, having only used the one that wowed me. This one comes in a spray form, not a mist.
To smooth my messy hair, he sprays the conditioner into his hands, rubs it, and then gently brushes it into my roots. Not only does this make my hair smooth and non-greasy, it also gives me the long-lasting hold I’ve been missing.
A month after learning this trick, it’s become part of my daily routine. Always wash your hands after use, or it’ll leave you with a sticky, uncomfortable feeling. And, if you’re like me and don’t wash your hair every day, you’ll need to comb your hair before reapplying conditioner.
However, lately my roots have felt less greasy and look smoother, all thanks to my trusty liquid hair spray.
