Every year, the stars of the Cannes Film Festival combine cinema with serious fashion. Bella Hadid confidently took the title of Queen of Cannes with a series of classic, statement-making, dress code-breaking looks, while Jennifer Lawrence was just as elegant on her return to the Croisette.
The actor was in Cannes for the premiere of Lynne Ramsay’s film, Darling, I Love You, in which she co-stars with Robert Pattinson. For the evening, she wore an exquisite Christian Dior custom scalloped gown. The off-white gown featured sculptural pleats inspired by a 1949 Polenc dress by Dior and took 250 hours to create.
Earlier in the day, she also wore a more bohemian Dior ensemble, a white and black floral gown with sheer sleeves and black piping – perfect for a Dior dinner or, if she so desired, a stroll along the promenade.
But it was Jennifer Lawrence who cemented her place in festival fashion history by donning a gown for the second time that evening.
Lawrence once again wore an all-black velvet one-shoulder gown by Dior, with a twisted neckline and a long, slender train that swirled around her arms. She accessorized with swirling earrings in silver and green gemstones and peep-toe heels.
Lawrence then received a standing ovation after a screening of Ramsay’s film, based on the 2017 novel of the same name by author Ariana Harwich. Critics raved about Lawrence’s performance as a woman who suffers postpartum depression and develops psychosis, pitting her against her unfaithful husband, played by Robert Pattinson. To the audience’s applause, Lawrence celebrated the moment with a passionate kiss with husband Cooke Maroney.
Lawrence, who recently welcomed her second child, was five months pregnant during filming. “Having a child changes everything. It changes your whole life. It’s brutal and incredible,” she told Vanity Fair about motherhood. “So not only do they influence every decision about whether I work, where I work, when I work, they teach me – I mean, I didn’t know I could feel so much, and my job is very emotional.
It’s like touching a blister or something – it’s very sensitive. So, they’ve obviously changed my life for the better, and they’ve changed my creativity. If you want to be an actor, I highly recommend having children.”
Lawrence and Maroney returned to the red carpet in style.
