Rooney Mara Brings Retro and New Glamour to Cannes Film Festival

by Tina

The annual Cannes Film Festival in France is in full swing. While many A-listers have stepped out in gorgeous gowns, few have done it as well as Rooney Mara.

Supporting her partner Joaquin Phoenix (who stars in Eddington), the star brought her signature ethereal style to the Cannes stage—choosing two stunning Givenchy gowns that perfectly matched her understated red carpet aesthetic. One was fresh off the fall runway, and the other was a classic 1950s dress.

Mara made her first appearance at the Eddington Film Festival premiere on Friday with Phoenix. That day, she wore a vintage dress that still feels modern today. The ivory off-the-shoulder dress is from the brand’s Spring 1956 couture collection and features a bow at the back and delicate lace details.

Of course, Mara is no stranger to vintage fashion: She’s worn a number of award-winning vintage designs over the years, including a vintage Givenchy Fall 1996 dress she wore to the Academy Awards last year.

However, for last night’s premiere of Die, My Love, Mara switched up for a more modern dress designed by Givenchy Creative Director Sarah Burton. The black off-the-shoulder mini A-line dress is from the designer’s Fall 2025 collection and marks her debut for the brand.

While Mara blended the past with the present, both dresses had a timeless feel, not to mention they complemented her signature black and white look. The dress perfectly captured the glamour of Cannes while being completely in line with her personal style. Who doesn’t love a vintage win?
