If you’re like me, you’ve had a complicated love affair with mesh ever since that brief but deeply regrettable rave period.
You know the kind… fishnet tops, exposed boobs, wet dance floors. We live and learn. But this season, mesh isn’t about flaunting, it’s about layering and disruptive silhouettes.
From Simone Rocha’s puffy layers to architectural mesh outerwear at Fendi and Remain, designers embraced transparency on the Spring/Summer 2025 catwalks.
And the trend doesn’t stop there: Dries Van Noten, Gaultier, and Alaïa continued their love of sheerness in their latest collections, showing how long the trend has staying power.
But how do you wear it in real life? If you want to wear mesh, my advice: start small.
Layer a sheer shirt over something you already love: a great white t-shirt, for example. A linen shirt. Or your favorite tank top.
These days, mesh isn’t just for club kids. It’s sleeker, smarter, and most importantly, easier to style.
If you’re looking for some editor-favorite outfit inspiration, keep reading. I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite looks, along with tips, tricks, and hacks to make the style go with everything.
How to Wear the New Mesh Trend
Start with Subtle Layering
Take on the sheer trend with ease by layering mesh as an outer layer. Try layering a sheer shirt over a white tank or luxe linen shirt to add texture without looking too revealing. The key is contrast: strike a balance between sheer and structured.
Mix and Match with Tailoring
Wear mesh under a suit for a work-friendly look. Wearing a sheer top under a double-breasted blazer or with wide-leg pants creates just the right amount of interest without looking over the top.
My favourite way to style it is to pair a sheer skirt or pajama-style bodysuit with an oversized oxford shirt and a structured jacket.
Try Free People’s Kiss Kiss Slip Skirt (£78) paired with this John Lewis Blazer (£79) or M&S’s Waistcoat (£25). Keep your colour palette minimal.
I’d go for a snowbell-coloured skirt with a soft off-white. It makes the whole look feel both luxe and fashion-forward, and is one of the easiest ways to create a stylish look without any fuss.
Pair it with flats
If the thought of wearing all-over mesh makes your heart race, start from scratch and work your way up. Last year, Dear Frances’ mesh ballet flats took over Instagram, with every cool girl from London to Copenhagen wearing them, latte in hand and, of course, barefoot.
They’re still a top choice, but high street brands are starting to catch on too. I love the embellished pair from George at Asda, £14, and the blush version from Steve Madden, £90.
I’ve been wearing black capri trousers and a black tube top, a look that makes me feel like I’m in 1960s Paris.
A TBCo scarf (£49) would be perfect, and the brand’s latest Artist collection is a delight. It’s an accessory that feels like jewellery without being too over the top.
Keep it wearable (and comfortable)
Mesh fabrics may look stylish, but comfort is key. Opt for stretchy, lined fabrics or breathable blends, and make sure you don’t have to adjust them too often.
That almost invisible dress might look beautiful on the SS25 catwalk, but you’ll still need to sit in it.
Take a cue from Natalie’s outfit: opt for a cozy see-through dress that’ll make you ask, “Can I sleep in this?”
Think effortless, slightly sheer pieces. Pair with sheer socks and loafers for a perfect, yet unconventional look.
Don’t be afraid to let sleeves peek through chunky knits or play with sheer panels in unexpected places; it’s all about subtle surprises that keep the wearability and coolness of mesh.
