The 2025 Cannes Film Festival has officially begun—but with some last-minute surprises. The festival announced on Monday, one day before the premieres, that this year’s red carpet will be barred from the nude dresses and eye-popping trains that stars love. Remember Bella Hadid’s iconic Schiaparelli dress and long necklace from 2021? No more.
“For reasons of etiquette, nudity is prohibited on the red carpet, as well as in any other area of the Festival,” the dress code on the Cannes website reads. “Oversized garments, especially those with excessive trains, are not permitted, as they hinder the normal flow of guests and affect the seating arrangements of spectators. The Festival’s welcoming team is obliged to exclude anyone who does not comply with these rules from the red carpet.”
It’s a refreshing change for France’s most fashion-forward red carpet. Because the new dress code was put in place on short notice, some stars ended up following the rules more than others (case in point: Wan Qianhui and Heidi Klum’s rebellious, flowing dresses).
But overall, the stars are seasoned masters of formalwear, and they still kicked off the festival in style. Supermodels stole the show, with Bella Hadid, Irina Shayk and Alessandra Ambrosio all making appearances.
