In 2023, the pop star released the music video for the song “Flowers.” Since its release, the music video has been viewed over 1 billion times on YouTube.
In the opening shot, Cyrus wears a vintage gold Saint Laurent lamé gown with an oversized hood and midriff cutouts — a dress very similar to the one Lawrence wore on the red carpet at the 2012 premiere of The Hunger Games.
Lawrence also wore a gold lamé gown designed by Prabal Gurung, also with midriff cutouts, to the 2012 premiere of the film. At the premiere, the actress posed with co-stars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, with whom Cyrus was in an on-again, off-again relationship at the time.
Around the time of The Hunger Games premiere, rumors circulated that Cyrus and Hemsworth broke up because Hemsworth cheated on Cyrus with Lawrence, leading fans to believe the gold “flower” dress was a dig at the actress.
However, Cyrus recently confirmed that the rumor was false. While signing autographs outside of Jimmy Kimmel Live, a fan asked her, “Is your floral dress a reference to Jennifer Lawrence?”
The singer responded, “No, but I love that dress of hers.”
Lawrence addressed the costume drama during her performance of “Pleading the Fifth Amendment” during an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen in 2023.
“There’s been a lot of talk that this video is a reference to a secret relationship you had with Liam Hemsworth while he was with Miley Cyrus,” Cohen asked. “Can you respond to that?”
“I’d love to: Not true, totally a rumor,” the No Regrets star responded. “I mean, we all know that Liam and I kissed once. It was years after they broke up,” she added, referring to their kiss in The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1.
“So I just think it was just a coincidence,” Lawrence concluded.
Cyrus and Hemsworth’s on-again, off-again relationship began during the filming of The Last Song in 2009 – the two got engaged in 2012, but postponed their wedding in April 2013 and called off their engagement in September of the same year.
In 2016, Hemsworth and Cyrus got back together and got engaged. The former couple tied the knot in December 2018, but separated less than a year later in August 2019. They officially divorced in February 2020.
